Hi – my name is Dave Turberfield. Just a quick introduction to let you know a little bit about who I am and what I'm up to.
I've been living in various parts of Asia since moving here from the UK in 1994. I'm currently living in Singapore with my wife Michelle and our two teenage kids, San San and Jonathan. Michelle is Singaporean and although we have moved around a lot over the years, we all consider Singapore to be home – for now at least…
I have been very fortunate that Michelle shares my love for travel and living in different countries. If we are in one place for too long, we get itchy feet and start thinking about where's next. We've lived in Malaysia (twice), Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong and the UK and I guess we have moved on average every four years or so.
So what have I been doing that has had me running around like that? I was working for a company called Environmental Resources Management or ERM. A fantastic firm – environment health and safety consultancy company – and I was doing all kinds of really cool technical consulting projects not just in Asia but all over the world. I also worked my way through the corporate structure. I was the Managing Partner for ERM's businesses in Singapore and then in Korea and for seven years was Managing Partner for the Asia Pacific focusing on safety culture transformation work – fantastic stuff! Working with leaders to help them create the behaviors they want on the front line.
This worked well for me, being very much into the personal development space. I've been meditating since I was sixteen and have been studying and teaching Buddhist meditation for the last thirteen years and my work transforming safety culture gelled really well with that.
A few years ago as I was coming up to my fiftieth birthday, I started to think what could I do to put something back… all the stuff that I have learned, whatever wisdom I might have – how can I put that back into the world to real benefit?
So I retrained as a professional coach, left ERM after twenty odd years and I moved into professional - business and life - coaching. I work with clients one to one and online – it's incredibly energizing and rewarding work and I wonder why it took me so long to make the change.
I'm also still working with my old firm from time to time on a contract bases, delivering the technical consulting projects that I love and am currently deeply engrossed in a mission to understand the online world… adapt to thrive!
As well as meditating every day, I'm also a runner, cyclists, a swimmer and a vegetarian. Favorite authors include Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, Shantideva, Geshe Chekawa, Ken Wilbur, Eckhart Tolle, Peter Senge, Tony Schwartze, Rane Eisler among others. I'd say my top five values in life are spirituality, peace and happiness, family, compassion and freedom.
